Before You Begin: What You’ll Need
Unlock a World Without Language Barriers: How to Use Translation Mode on Your Samsung Earbuds
Lost in translation? Tired of fumbling with apps when speaking with someone in another language? If you own a pair of compatible Samsung Galaxy Buds (like the Buds2, Buds2 Pro, Buds Pro, Buds Live, or Buds FE) and a recent Samsung Galaxy phone, a powerful real-time translator fits snugly right in your ears!

Samsung’s Bixby voice assistant, combined with the Interpreter feature, transforms your Galaxy Buds into a seamless translation tool. Here’s your step-by-step guide to setting it up and using it like a pro:
Before You Begin: What You’ll Need
- Compatible Samsung Earbuds: Galaxy Buds2, Buds2 Pro, Buds Pro, Buds Live, or Buds FE.
- Compatible Samsung Galaxy Smartphone: Requires a relatively recent model (typically Galaxy S10 series or newer, Note 10 series or newer, Fold/Flip series, or recent A-series) running One UI 3.1 or higher. Android 11+ is generally required.
- Active Internet Connection: Translation happens online.
- Bixby Enabled: Ensure Samsung’s voice assistant is set up on your phone.
- Galaxy Wearable App: Installed and up-to-date (for managing your Buds).
Step 1: Ensure Your Buds Are Connected & Paired
- Place your Samsung earbuds in their charging case and open the lid near your Galaxy phone.
- A pop-up should appear on your phone screen. Tap Connect. If it doesn’t pop up:
- Open the Galaxy Wearable app on your phone.
- Tap Add new device and follow the prompts to pair your Buds.
- Once paired, ensure the earbuds are connected to your phone via Bluetooth.
Step 2: Setting Up Bixby Interpreter for Quick Access (Recommended)
While you can activate translation directly via voice command, setting up the Bixby Interpreter tile makes it lightning-fast:
- Access Quick Settings: Swipe down twice from the top of your phone screen to see all your Quick Settings tiles.
- Edit Tiles: Tap the Pencil icon or + icon to edit your tiles.
- Add “Bixby Interpreter”: Scroll through the list of available tiles and find Bixby Interpreter. Drag it up into your active Quick Settings panel. Tap Done or the back arrow.
- Check Permissions (If Prompted): The first time you set this up, ensure you grant Bixby the necessary permissions (like microphone access).
Step 3: Launching Translation Mode – Two Easy Methods
Method 1: Using the Quick Settings Tile (Fastest)
- Swipe down twice to access your full Quick Settings.
- Tap the Bixby Interpreter tile you just added.
- Bixby will launch, ready for translation. You’ll see the Interpreter interface with two language options.
Method 2: Using Your Voice
- Wear both of your Samsung earbuds.
- Press and hold the touchpad on either earbud. (Hold it until you hear the Bixby chime).
- Clearly say: “Hi Bixby, turn on Interpreter” or “Hi Bixby, open Interpreter.”
- Bixby will confirm and open the Interpreter screen.
Step 4: Using the Interpreter Feature with Your Buds
- Select Languages: On the Interpreter screen, you’ll see two sides: “My Language” (what you speak) and “Other Language” (what the other person speaks). Tap each to choose the correct languages from the list. Popular options like English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, etc., are available.
- Choose Mode (If Available): Depending on your phone model/OS version, you might see icons for different modes:
- Conversation: Ideal for face-to-face chats. You see both languages side-by-side. Speak into your phone’s mic.
- Listen: Translates incoming speech only (e.g., listening to an announcement). Audio plays through your Buds.
- Speak: Translates only your speech so the other person can hear it. You speak into the phone.
- Auto: Smart mode that tries to detect who is speaking.
- For Conversation Mode: This is the most common use with Buds.
- Hear the Translation: The translated speech for you will play directly through your Samsung earbuds.
- Speak Clearly: Talk clearly into your phone’s microphone. Bixby will capture your speech, translate it, and play it aloud from the phone’s speaker so the other person can hear. (The phone essentially acts as the loudspeaker for the translated output).
- Start Talking: Tap the mic icon next to “My Language” when it’s your turn to speak. After you finish, the translation will play from the phone. When the other person speaks (directly towards your phone’s mic), their speech will be translated and played into your earbuds.
Pro Tips for Smooth Translation:
- Hold Steady: Keep your phone between you and the other person to pick up both voices clearly.
- Quiet Environment: Background noise can interfere. Find a relatively quiet spot.
- Speak Naturally: Don’t shout, but speak clearly at a normal pace. Avoid slang or AI powered gadgets very complex sentences.
- Phrase Clearly: Break thoughts into manageable chunks. Don’t ramble for minutes non-stop.
- Manage Expectations: It’s machine translation. It’s very good but not perfect! Focus on conveying the core meaning.
- No Buds? Still Works! You can use Interpreter mode without Buds, listening through the phone speaker. But using Buds makes hearing the translation much clearer in noisy environments and more private.
Unleash Your Global Conversations!
And there you have it! With just your Samsung Galaxy Buds and Galaxy phone, you’ve got a powerful interpreter right in your pocket (and ears). Whether you’re traveling, meeting international clients, connecting with new friends, or simply exploring a foreign menu, the Bixby Interpreter feature removes a major barrier.
So put those earbuds in, launch the interpreter, and start a conversation you never thought possible! The world just got a whole lot smaller.
